Beach huts at Bournemouth

Beach huts on the promenade at Bournemouth

Beach huts have been a prominent feature of the seafront at Bournemouth since the 1930s. They vary in style from the traditional, wooden, shed-like constructions to the ultra modern, concrete terrace style huts. The 1950s designed concrete Overstrand beach huts have recently been revamped by Wayne and Gerardine Hemingway, founders of the Red or Dead label, as Beach Pods for the new surf reef at Boscombe. These Beach Pods are currently retailing between 65,000 and 90,000 and are for day use only. Each Beach Pod has its own unique retro artwork on the walls and is supplied with kitchen units, a kettle, microwave and chairs and wind breaks specifically designed by Wayne Hemingway.

In the 1960s, the cost of renting a beach hut for one week was five pounds.  The huts were provided with four deckchairs, a table and a cupboards.  There was no cooking stove or crockery provided. Running water was provided nearby, although not in the huts themselves.  Today, prices for one week's hire start at around £28.

Amidst the publicity blaze about the Wayne Hemingway Beach Pods, Bournemouth Council neglected these 1950s concrete beach huts, right. They have now demolished them to make room to store the Land Train. Progress?
